When you talk about Indian Cinema and Bollywood, one family name springs to mind, The Kapoors. The relation between Indian cinema and Kapoor goes back long even before the independence of India. After all these years of progressing and coming to this stage what now we call Bollywood, Kapoor remains to be a name that his deeply embedded in the history of Indian cinema.
Let’s take a look at the Kapoor family which brought to us a prime source of entertainment without which we cannot even imagine what our lives would be.
The pioneer of Indian theatre and Hindi film industry, Prithviraj was born on November 03, 1906 Samundri, Punjab Province in British India. In 1928, he moved to Bombay where he joined the Imperial Films Company. His most memorable movie remains to be Mughal-E-Azam of 1960 where he played the role of Mughal Emperor Akbar.
Prithviraj founded the Prithvi Theatres whose premiere performance was, Kalidasa’s Abhijñānaśākuntalam in 1942. Prithviraj has three sons:
- Raj Kapoor,
- Shammi Kapoor and
- Shashi Kapoor
1) Raj Kapoor
The eldest son of Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor is known as the “greatest showman of Indian cinema”. He was a great actor, producer and director of Hindi cinema.
In 1948, at the young age of 24, Raj Kapoor opened his own studio, R. K. Films and became the youngest director of that time, making his debut with his movie Aag. Raj Kapoor married Krishna Malhotra in 1946 and had five children- Three sons and actors, Randhir, Rishi and Rajiv and two daughters, Ritu Nanda and Rima Jain.
A) Randhir Kapoor
Randhir Kapoor was born on February 15, 1947, and is one the most famous actors, producers and directors. He is known for his roles in Jawani Diwani, Heeralaal Pannalal. He married Babita and has two daughters:
- Karisma Kapoor
- Kareena Kapoor Khan
B) Rishi Kapoor
Rishi Kapoor was born on September 4, 1952, and is known for his role in movie Bobby which was also his debut movie. He married actress Neetu Singh on 22 January 1980 and has two children:
- Ranbir Kapoor
- Riddhima Kapoor Sahani
C) Rajiv Kapoor
Rajiv Kapoor was born on August 25, 1962, and is known for his role in Ram Teri Ganga Maili.
2) Shammi Kapoor
The “Junglee” of Indian Cinema, Shammi Kapoor is one of the most beloved Indian cinema actors and film-makers of all time. He was a prominent lead actor in Hindi cinema from lates 1950s until early 1970s. Shammi Kapoor is recognised as one of the most entertaining lead actors to work in Hindi cinema.
Shammi Kapoor married Geeta Bali with whom he had two children:
A) Aditya Raj Kapoor
Aditya Raj Kapoor was born on July 1, 1956, and is a famous Indian actor, director and producer.
B) Kanchan Kapoor
3) Shashi Kapoor
Shashi Kapoor was the youngest of the three children of Prithviraj Kapoor. Like his father and brothers, Shashi Kapoor too was a successful actor and film-maker of the Hindi cinema. Shashi Kapoor made his debut a lead actor in the 1961 film, Dharmputra. The actor did more than 115 movies until the early 1980’s as a lead actor and also in multi-star cast, support roles and special appearances.
Shashi Kapoor married Jennifer Kendal in 1958 and have three children:
A) Kunal Kapoor
Kunal Kapoor made his debut with the 1972 English-language film Siddhartha.
B) Karan Kapoor
Karan Kapoor was born on January 18, 1962, and is a famous Indian actor and model. Karan made his debut in Shyam Benegal’s 1978 film, Junoon.
C) Sanjana Kapoor
Sanjana Kapoor was born on November 27, 1967, and made her acting debut in 1981 movie, 36 Chowringhee Lane where she played the role of a younger version of the lead female character.
